What the Ohio Concealed Carry Law Requires

Ohio law requires applicants for a concealed handgun license to complete an approved training course. That course must include at least eight hours of training and must cover specific topics set by the Ohio Attorney General. At Geauga Firearms Academy, our Ohio CCW course meets and exceeds all of these requirements.

The course covers Ohio firearms laws, safe handling and storage of handguns, the proper care and cleaning of handguns, safe loading and unloading techniques, and live-fire training. You will also spend time on the legal use of deadly force — one of the most important topics in the entire course.

Who Qualifies to Attend

To apply for an Ohio Concealed Handgun License, you must be at least 21 years old, be legally permitted to possess a firearm under Ohio and federal law, have no recent felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history, and have completed the required training. How the Day Is Structured

Our Ohio CCW course runs in a single day with both a classroom component and a live-fire qualification on the range. Here is a general overview of how the day flows.

Morning: Classroom Instruction

The day begins in the classroom. Your instructor will cover Ohio firearms law in detail, including where you can and cannot carry, how to interact with law enforcement while carrying, and what the legal thresholds are for using deadly force in self-defense. This portion takes several hours and involves discussion, not just lecture. Students are encouraged to ask questions — this is often where people learn the most.

Afternoon: Safe Handling and Fundamentals Review

After classroom instruction, you will move through safe handling techniques, loading and unloading procedures, and a review of firearm fundamentals. This portion is practical and hands-on. Instructors walk through each technique with you. No prior experience is assumed. Beginners are welcome and regularly attend this course.

Range Time: Live-Fire Qualification

The live-fire qualification is the portion students are most anxious about — and the one they are most often surprised by. The Ohio CCW qualification is not a difficult marksmanship test. You will fire a set number of rounds at close range targets and are expected to hit within a standard target area. The goal is to demonstrate safe firearm handling and basic competency, not precision shooting.

You should bring your own handgun and ammunition for the qualification. We recommend a minimum of 50 rounds. If you do not own a firearm, reach out to us in advance and we can discuss options for the range portion.

What to Bring to Your Ohio CCW Class

• A valid government-issued photo ID — required for enrollment documentation
• Your handgun — unloaded and in a case for transport
• At least 50 rounds of ammunition — factory-loaded, no reloads
• Eye protection and hearing protection — required on the range; we have loaners available if needed
• Comfortable range-appropriate clothing — closed-toe shoes are required; avoid low-cut tops on the range
• A notebook — optional but helpful for the classroom portion
• Lunch or snacks — the course runs most of the day and there may not be a long break

What Happens After You Complete the Course

When you complete the course, you will receive your Ohio Attorney General-approved certificate of completion. This certificate is required when you apply for your Concealed Handgun License at your local Sheriff’s Office.

The CHL application process is handled separately through the Sheriff’s Office. You will need to submit the completed application, your certificate of completion, the required fee, and pass a background check. The Sheriff’s Office processes CHL applications and issues the license directly.

How Long Does the CHL Take to Arrive?

When you complete the course, you will receive your Ohio Attorney General-approved certificate of completion. This certificate is required when you apply for your Concealed Handgun License through your local Sheriff’s Office.

Do I Need to Be an Experienced Shooter?

If you are concerned about the live-fire portion, you are welcome to schedule a private instruction session prior to the course to build confidence on the range.

What If I Do Not Own a Firearm?

Contact us before registering if you do not own a firearm. We will discuss available options for the range portion of the course. We want every student to be able to complete the certification, and we will work with you to find a solution.

Can I Bring a Significant Other or Family Member?

Yes, and we encourage it. Many of our students attend with spouses or family members. If more than one person in your household is pursuing a CHL, taking the course together is one of the most practical things you can do. You will share the same legal knowledge, the same training experience, and be better prepared to support each other.
